Milestone: Rheidol

Milestone: Rheidol is scheduled for release on 22 February 2026. Significant changes are as follows:

🔑 Passkeys support (“biometric login”, among other names)

On supported devices, you can now set up Three Rings to allow you to log in using Passkeys (also known as “WebAuthn”). This can allow you to, for example, configure your mobile phone to let you use it to log in to Three Rings using your fingerprint or facial scan, or your laptop to log in using your fingerprint scanner. From the My Account page, click “Add Passkey” to see if your device is compatible. Once set up, you can use the “Log in with Passkey” button on the login page.

Note that your biometrics (e.g. fingerprints) are never shared with Three Rings: they’re used to unlock a special key that gets saved on your device, and that key is used to log you in to Three Rings.

🔒 Two-factor authentication (2FA) more-widely available

Two-factor authentication was previously only available to users with “self-managed” accounts. Now we’ve made it available to everybody using Three Rings, even if they prefer to keep their account in the default “organisation-managed” state. You can enable 2FA via the My Account page, if you want it.

This is accompanied by a handful of related enhancements:

  • Users can choose to permit an organisation they volunteer at to reset their 2FA if they lose it
  • Organisations can choose whether or not volunteers are ‘locked’ if other organisations the volunteer volunteers with reset their 2FA (the default is on, for best security)
  • Users with 2FA enabled are prompted if they’ve not downloaded a set of backup codes recently
  • Backup codes can be reset/refreshed (useful if, for example, you suspect your backup codes have been compromised)
  • Organisations can opt to make 2FA mandatory for all of their volunteers

🔍 Searching for content in Wikis and Wiki Pages

You can now search on the titles and contents of Wikis and Wiki Pages. Select the Wikis by Name and Contents checkbox on the search dialog: this is checked automatically if you are searching from the Wiki tab.

📊 Stats improvements

The Stats > Specific Shift report now shows the total number of shifts available and the percentage of them that have been filled in the specified window.

🐞 Bugfixes and Minor Improvements

  • Events (attendee list), Admin > Log, and several Stats reports (Availability, Shift Changes, Export Rotas, Shift History, Related Volunteers’ Changes) now support exporting in Excel format
  • The number of volunteers signed up for a shift is now displayed when you select a shift. This particularly makes it easier to see how many volunteers have signed up for larger shifts.
  • It’s now clearer when and why you’re not allowed to open an email attachment that was intended for somebody else. If your organisation’s email attachments are set to “secure” mode, forwarding an email to another volunteer can lead to confusion when they are unable to open the attachments (which weren’t addressed for them). We’ve improved the messaging to better explain why an attachment can’t be opened and what to do about it.
  • Improved accessibility for screenreader and keyboard users, including: more buttons can be reached without using a pointing device, Filestore Permissions are interpretable by screenreader software, heading cascades are more logical and more pages have a sensible top-level title heading, datepickers are easier to interpret using a screenreader and clicking day/month/year labels should be less-surprising, etc.
  • Tables (such as the Directory “…as list” view, the Filestore, and Stats reports) now have a more consistent appearance.
  • Buttons for downloading calendar files and/or subscribing to calendar feeds now have more consistent behaviour.

We’re remain endlessly thankful for people who get in touch to suggest improvements to Three Rings.
