What you’ll get out of it

We’re a team of friendly volunteers who’re all former volunteers, who want to help other volunteers. By volunteering with us in the admin team, you’re helping us support 450+ organisations, like the Samaritans, Childline and Nightlines, do their thing, without worrying about providing their own volunteering solution, or paying commercial rates for it.

In terms of practical benefit for you, we’re always happy to give references for job applications, if you’re applying for jobs. Three Rings has quite a broad tech stack, so there’ll be a chance for you to work on something you’re more familiar with, and also less familiar with, if you choose.

Last but not least, you’ll get the chance to meet the wider Three Rings volunteer community too! We have a Slack group, where we all chat, and have regular optional Sunday night slack socials. We also have an annual Christmas party (with +1 invitations), and we invite all volunteers to the annual AGM too.

What the role involves

As a Three Rings dev, you’d be looking through the backlog and picking up tickets that you think you’d like to have a go at. We let people decide what they want to work on, and support them in that.

We have 3 or 4 releases a year, and the dev work we do fits into the next release cycle once it’s completed. There’s a 2 week beta testing period, in which we sometimes need to make adjustments based on testing feedback, so we ask that devs are around for these periods to pick up any feedback they might get.

There is no time commitment required other than this though – we generally recommend that you attend the Dev Camps that you can, but they definitely aren’t mandatory. We’re pretty flexible!

Support and training

We’ll help you get the Three Rings development area set up on your device, normally at one of our regular Dev Camps. We have one big week-long dev camp every year, and a couple of smaller weekend-long ones throughout the rest of the year.

We have an active dev Slack channel where you can ask for help and questions – we’re a friendly bunch, who like to help each other out!

We have a dedicated tech budget, so we can help you get any kit you need to volunteer with us. We also have a training budget, to help you get any training you might need too.
